Nursery or Reception (Early Years) home learning sheets for People Who Help Us Topic The ‘People Who Help Us’ topic covers the different jobs and roles in the community that help us, from emergency services, to teachers and builders. Children are encouraged to learn about these different roles and also have opportunities to practise life skills to keep themselves safe and healthy, such as learning about the emergency phone number 999 and dental / oral hygiene. There are a total of 18 activities that can easily be done at home split over two sheets. I ask children to select 3 per week to complete but you could suggest more. Activities are practical using items children will have at home. There are key questions to guide parents delivering the activities at home. The activities are topic based. They cover all areas of the EYFS curriculum. There are art projects, self care activities, movement, imaginative etc. There aren’t really stand alone phonics or number activities but these subjects are addressed in other activities e.g. where writing, stories, counting or measuring are involved. Originally made for Covid school/ bubble closures and where children were asked to complete 3 tasks a week, however, it could be easily used as a half termly or termly home learning sheet where children complete one task a week or similar. This can also be used as a basis for activity planning for the topic or used by support or cover staff.

A great resource for an independent play dough making activity used in Reception (though could be used with children of other ages). I modeled how to make the play dough to my class, then the children accessed it themselves. I gave as little help as possible. Children make own play dough regularly. This allows fantastic mathematical language, teamwork, communication and problem solving skills. This pack includes: recipe slides which can be used on the board to demonstrate to the children what they need to do, then be printed to create a recipe book. Recipe is written as simply as possible (higher ability Reception children should be able to read it) and represented in pictures too. A great 21 page resource for an independent baking activity used in Reception (though could be used with children of other ages, particularly Year 1 or children with SEND). I modelled how to make the pies to my class, then put them in small, mixed ability groups to make the pies. I did not help them at all unless they were really stuck and came to ask for help (except with the oven!) They knew that they had to help each other instead. It was amazing how well they did! The children demonstrated fantastic mathematical language, teamwork, communication and problem solving skills. I do an independent baking tasks every so often as an assessment method. A Christmas themed resource to support teaching repeating patterns (2 and 3 repeats) Power point activity for the interactive whiteboard where children need to complete the repeating patterns. They will develop the skills to identify, describe and continue patterns, Differentiated cut and stick activity where children can then independently complete repeating patterns and also make their own. Children will practise the skills to identify, describe and continue patterns, The cutting also develops fine motor skills. The patterns have pictures missing both at the end and in the middle and the resources include patterns with 2 and 3 repeats.

There is information for parents to help them facilitate the activities too. Activities include baking, making shape pictures, counting decorations. Areas covered include: number recognition counting skills shape, space and measure work writing numerals I asked children to choose 2 activities per week to complete and put an observation on Tapestry but you could alter this to suit your needs. Good to send out if children are away, isolating or if the class is shut, or just as regular home learning to support work done in class.

It includes: 18 challenge cards- differentiated 3 ways: adding 3 numbers, adding 2 numbers, counting out a number of items Fruits and pancakes that can be printed and cut out to be used as an aid for working out and as a creative activity Fruit themed number lines Suggested set up- photo with notes This could be used as a totally practical activity (as in my suggested setup- included in resource) OR it can be a more formal written activity if children were to stick the challenge cards in books and write out their working.
